Looking back on your career, do you have a funny story to share?

It was a routine property viewing in Bantry Bay until it wasn’t.

I walked my client to the front door to say goodbye,, and in that exact moment the door slammed shut behind me. I was locked in the corridor. My handbag, phone, and car keys everything was still inside the apartment.

For a moment, I just stood there trying to process it. No phone, no keys, no way in.

I then went to the neighbour, knocked on his door, and explained the situation. , I asked him, completely seriously, if I could go through his apartment, jump from his balcony into the balcony of the unit I was showing to regain access.

He looked at me like I was crazy.

To be fair, it was a sixth-floor and it wasn’t exactly a normal request.

But after a moment, he agreed and let me through.

So I climbed over from his balcony into the apartment and got back inside.

A proper “only in real estate” moment.

And then just when I thought it was over, the neighbour came over to check on everything. We started chatting, and by the end of the conversation, he also gave me his property to sell.

What started as being locked out in a corridor ended with a reminder that in property chaos and opportunity often arrive together 🙂

What existing trends do you see in the property industry?

In the luxury segment, we’re seeing a continued influx of both semigration and international buyers choosing Cape Town for its lifestyle offering and relative value on a global scale. Areas along the Atlantic Seaboard remain particularly desirable due to their scarcity, views, and proximity to key amenities.

What’s changed, however, is buyer behaviour. Buyers are far more data-driven and selective, they understand value and are not afraid to wait. This makes accurate pricing and strategic positioning absolutely critical. The gap between a well-priced property and an overpriced one has never been more evident.

Another major trend is the shift toward digital-first engagement. A significant portion of buyers are introduced to properties online before ever stepping foot in them, which means that high-quality visual marketing, video, and strong agent branding are no longer optional,  they are essential to competing at a high level.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry?

Real estate is a relationship-driven business at its core, especially in the premium market. My advice would be to focus less on transactions and more on building genuine, long-term relationships. Trust and credibility take time to establish, but they are what ultimately sustain your business.

Secondly, understand that you are the brand. In a competitive market, your reputation, visibility, and consistency will determine your success. It is important to align yourself with a platform that supports and elevates your personal brand rather than defines it. That is very much the philosophy we work within at The Agency Property Group, where the agent is placed at the centre of the business.

Lastly, commit to discipline over motivation. The early stages can be tough, and results are rarely immediate. The agents who succeed are those who remain consistent with their prospecting, follow-ups, and market knowledge, even when there is no immediate reward.
